- The Avengers
- The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
- Cabin in the Woods
The Avengers: arguably the best super hero film to come out in recent years, if not ever. When it comes to The Avengers, it is clear that the creators knew exactly what type of film they were making. Notable for an interesting cast of characters and for providing the most straightforward fun of any film on the list.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: Peter Jackson continues to do Tolkien's legendary work great justice. The Hobbit film takes several elements from the Lord of the Rings trilogy that made them so good (a great cast, phenomenal sets, and an accurate retelling of the original story) and adds in numerous cultural details and a more enticing adventure story.
Skyfall: the third part of the Daniel Craig James Bond reboot, Skyfall improves upon Casino Royale and avoids all of the pitfalls that Quantum Solace suffered from. It also plays off a few 007 tropes and features a few ridiculous gadgets, women, and martinis.
Lincoln: a fantastic drama that features an excellent retelling of key historical events during Lincoln's presidency, the best cast of characters of any film on this list, and some truly chilling speeches.
Cabin in the Woods: Cabin in the Woods was the surprise hit of the year. What starts as a simple teen horror flick quickly turns into an interesting and original science fiction film. The acting suits the film, the pacing is great, the twists are well done, and the story is fresh and entertaining.
Honorable mentions: Wreck-It-Ralph, Prometheus, and The Hunger Games.
Films (from 2012) I'd Like to Watch: Dredd, World War Z, and Taken 2.
